Living in the Community
Getting Involved in the Community
Students should work to integrate themselves fully into their off-campus community. Many opportunities for community involvement exist. There are several neighborhood associations in areas adjacent to the University. Students are encouraged to attend neighborhood association meetings to learn more about the area’s resources and activities. For further information about these associations, contact the Office of Government and Community Relations at 315-443-3919. In addition, the Westcott Community Center offers concerts, plays and lectures. For further information about programs at the Westcott Community Center, 315-478-8634.Adopt-A-Street is an initiative of the Office of Orientation and Off-Campus Programs that provides Syracuse University and SUNY ESF student organizations with a long-term service project in the neighborhoods adjacent to campus. Student organizations that participate in Adopt-A-Street clean-up litter on their adopted blocks once a month and distribute timely information to residents on an as-needed basis. Adopt-A-Street is supported by the Department of Public Works, SU Office of Student Life, SUNY ESF Office of Student Activities.
There are many streets available in the University Neighborhood and we are looking for student organizations to get involved this spring semester, there are four scheduled clean-ups!
For more information about Adopt-A-Street please contact the Office of Orientation and Off-Campus Programs at 315-443-5489 or oocp@syr.edu .
