Q: Should my son or daughter obtain renters’ insurance?
A: Renters’ insurance covers personal belongings (e.g., stereo, TVs, computers, etc.) if they are stolen or damaged, and may provide liability protection as well. Landlords and property owners are generally not responsible for personal property.
Renters’ insurance is pretty affordable, ranging from $65 to $225 a year depending on the level of coverage. To determine how much coverage needed, check with a licensed agent. In some cases, your homeowners insurance will cover your son or daughter’s personal property. Syracuse University offers a “personal property” only insurance plan for enrolled students.
