For Parents
Q: Can first-year and second-year students live off campus at Syracuse University?
A: No. All first- and second-year undergraduate students (except students with families, SUNY-ESF students and students living at home with their parents) must live on campus. Only upper-class and graduate students may rent apartments off campus. Off-campus apartments are not managed by the University but by private property owners. Students may not cancel their housing to go off campus unless they are released from their commitment.
Petitions for exemption from these policies will be considered for reasons such as financial hardship (i.e., enrollment would not be possible if a students is required to fulfill youther housing commitment), a documented medical reason, or some other type of unique circumstance. For more information, contact the Office of Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Services at 443-2721, or visit the following website at housingmealplans.syr.edu. You can download the petition form from this website under “forms and downloads.”
