Q: How does my son or daughter begin his or her search for an apartment off campus?

A: There are a number of rental units available in the University area. One of the best sources for advice and information about off-campus housing are his or her friends and classmates. Another good place to start the search may be Orange Housing. Orange Housing maintains a web site of apartment offerings in the neighborhoods adjacent to campus. The Orange Housing website is www.orangehousing.com. It is important to keep in mind that this local company is not affiliated with Syracuse University or SUNY ESF. There are absolutely no guarantees about the quality and reliability of the information posted on the website, so it is very important to visit an apartment and meet the landlord before you agree to rent it! Orange Housing also offers roommate searches, sublet listings, and information relevant to apartment hunters.

Apartment listings can be found in local newspapers as well as in the Daily Orange. If s/he is willing to live outside of the neighborhoods right next to campus, s/he can expand his or her search to include other parts of Syracuse and the surrounding communities. A great place to start is the Apartment Finder website, at www.apartmentfinder.com. This site provides information about apartment complexes throughout the Syracuse area. Similar information can also be found at the website, www.therentersguide.com.

Every fall semester, the Office of Orientation and Off-Campus Programs sponsors a housing fair in the Schine Student Center. Several area landlords, representatives from the City of Syracuse’s Division of Code Enforcement, the Syracuse Police Department, the Syracuse Fire Department, and other neighborhood organizations will be on hand to answer questions and share information with students. Look for date of the Housing Fair in the fall.
